The AZ Sons of the American Revolution, led by the Barry M. Goldwater Chapter, wrote and performed a 30-minute play that commemorated the 250 th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Seventeen SAR Compatriots and DAR Daughters participated in the event. The play was performed in front of 400 elementary school children on 2/28/2025 and about 50 adults/families on 3/1/2025.
The 5-Act play was a combination of education, historical accuracy, and entertainment. In fact, 20% of the dialogue was the actual language/verbatims used by the historical characters. The acts were:
- Welcome and Introduction of Characters
-
Act 1: “The Threat is Here, Now.”
– Dramatizes the correspondence between Lord Dartmouth and General -
Act 2: “The Die Is Cast.”
– Highlights the scenes at the Buckman Tavern in Lexington, as Paul Revere arrives and the Patriots prepare for the British. -
Act 4: “Parker’s Revenge.”
– Features the gathering militia and the firefights along Battle Road as the British retreat from Concord. -
Act 5: “On the Independence.”
– Verbatim after-event readings from Lord Dartmouth, Isaiah Thomas and Reverend Jonas Clark. -
Epilogue
– Full cast in unison reading of the opening and closing paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence
The play was performed at the Pioneer Living History Museum in Phoenix, AZ during the “1776 Days Festival.” The festival was organized by the Southwest Living History Association (SWLHA). Notable events and guests at the festival included a Revolutionary War encampment, educational booths and exhibits by the DAR and SWLHA, a battle re-enactment, and a special appearance by renowned George Washington impersonator, Dan Shippey.
The play was also performed for the public on April 12, 2025, in Scottsdale AZ. About 50 people attended the performance.
